On "Being Saved" in Black America
While growing up in a very religious and church-going family, I often heard the phrase "Being Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved" was a rather spooky and mystical thing, and only the real holy folk could be such — whatever it was.

Christian Author of the Week: C. NaTasha Richburg
C. NaTasha Richburg has been married to her husband Melvin for over 25 years.  She is the mother of four children that range in age from sixteen to twenty.  Ms. Richburg is passionate that parables expressed in urban street language will lead youth and young adults into discussions that provide for a deeper understanding of the Bible. Mrs. Richburg focuses her writings for youth and young adults in a manner that provides them a slice of life that puts the Bible study participants on the same page. Depending upon the life experiences of the group, the short stories will provide the reader insight, provide consultation on a current real life issue or offer an opportunity for reflection depending on the life experience of the reader. Mrs. Richburg has a Masters of Business Administration from Morgan State University and a Masters in Information Systems from Johns Hopkins University.  She has attended, and completed many courses at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore.  Mrs. Richburg is currently attending Morgan State University in pursuit of a Doctorate in Urban Leadership Education. Mrs. Richburg professes Proverbs 24:5 (KJV) which says, “[a] wise man is strong; yea a man of knowledge increaseth strength.” E-mail address: cnrministries@verizon.net. Website: www.theCNRMinistries.com.

Pastor of the Week: Bishop Charles Blake, Pastor of West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles, California
Bishop Charles E. Blake serves as Presiding Bishop of the 6 million member Church of God in Christ, one of our nation's largest denominations. He also serves as the Jurisdictional Prelate of the First Jurisdiction of Southern California comprised of more than 250 churches. He is the pastor of West Angeles Church of God in Christ with a membership of over 24,000. West Angeles is deeply involved in providing not only for the spiritual life of its people, but also it provides more than 80 programs for the psychological, social, and economic enhancement of the community. As founder and CEO of Save Africa's Children, Bishop Blake oversees the support of more than 100 thousand children, in 340 orphan care programs, throughout more than 23 nations on the continent of Africa. Bishop Blake is married to Mae Lawrence Blake. They have three children and seven grandchildren. Website: http://www.westa.org.

Music Minister of the Week: Shirley Caesar
If you were beginning to worry that no significant traditional gospel albums made a mark in 2007, Shirley Caesar's After 40 Years … Still Sweeping Through the City is sure to lay those fears to rest. The title is fairly self-explanatory. This is the gospel matriarch's 40th anniversary as a solo recording artist, a career she began in 1966 after a leap of faith. A call to ministry led Caesar to leave The Caravans, arguably the most popular all-female gospel group of the 1950s, but from there she soared to new heights. Celebrity-minded gospel luminaries would use this occasion to roll out the red carpet and make this more about the guests and the creators than about the Creator, but not Caesar. This album was recorded live at Mount Calvary Word of Faith Church—the congregation she co-pastors with her husband—as the culmination of a week of seminars and training for church leaders. It's understandable then why Sweeping sounds like a Sunday morning extravaganza, with Caesar as the officiating minister. From top to bottom, Caesar is in command of her own celebration, roaring through a dozen tracks and 77 minutes of unbridled gospel fire. As soon as the blues-drenched "Sweeping Through the City" kicks things off, there's no stopping this disc, with every selection a masterwork in its own right, whether it's a floor-stomping hand-clapper, a choral sing-off, a storyteller, or all of the above. In good Caesar tradition, the classic "Hold My Mule" retains its exhortative qualities. It's a sermon-ette of histrionic proportions, where the singer spews fire and brimstone for six-plus minutes before actually doing any singing. This may be a turnoff for more delicate, unschooled listeners, but it's pure gospel heaven for traditionalist devotees of the genre—a vocal showstopper and rock-solid performance that demonstrates Caesar's pipes haven't aged a bit after four decades in music and ministry. A few Caesar essentials in the vein of "Hold My Mule" are missing from this commemorative effort, particularly the tour de force "Don't Drive Your Mama Away" and the crossover hit "No Charge," but that's nitpicking at best. There are enough Caesar classics here and old-time fervor to make Still Sweeping Through the City the best traditional gospel album of the year. E-mail address: info@shirleycaesar.com. Black Christian History: Betsey Stockton, a young black woman in company with 13 white missionaries, was on board a ship rounding the southern tip of South America. The missionaries were on their way to the Sandwich Islands (present-day Hawaii). They had left New Haven, Connecticut in November, sent out by the American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions, an agency at the forefront of American Protestantism's burgeoning interest in foreign missions. Betsey Stockton was in the second group of missionaries to go to Hawaii, the first having arrived two years before. The trip took five months by sea with no stopovers. Like others on board, Stockton kept a journal of the voyage and of her first couple of months in Hawaii. Source: BlackChurchMissions.org
