Rick
Warren is in a place he never expected to be: at the center of a
culture war. The pastor chosen by President-elect Barack Obama to give
the inaugural invocation backed Proposition 8, which banned gay
marriage in his home state of California. But he did so belatedly, with
none of the enthusiasm he brings to fighting AIDS and illiteracy.

"Being Saved" in Black America
While growing up in a very religious and church-going family, I often
heard the phrase "Being Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved"
was a rather spooky and mystical thing, and only the real holy folk
could be such — whatever it was.

Author of the Week: William D. Andrews
William D. Andrews was born in Gates, Pennsylvania. His family of seventeen children lived
in a rundown house, yet his mother still had enough to share with so
many others. After graduating from high school, William became a
minister and traveled extensively, emphasizing the training of
preachers. He spent many years as a postal employee and moved his job
with his ministry. He refused to become a rights advocate for fear of
becoming an angry man, and an angry man cannot preach God's eternal
love, forgiveness, and restoration. Andrews credits his compassion,
care and concern for the helpless, homeless, hungry and mistreated to
his Christ-centered faith, and to a mother that was so sharing. He
writes only on true subjects with names changed to protect identities.
His belief is that honesty and truth equal justice, freedom, and
success. He is the author of: Hush Little Children: America's March from Freedom to Dictatorship and Children Hostage of the State and America's Secret Children's Prisons. E-mail address: mia_alyss@yahoo.com.
Pastor of the
Week: Dr. Tom Benjamin, Pastor of Light of the World Christian Church in Indianapolis, Indiana
Dr. Tom Benjamin,
Senior Pastor of the historic Light of the World Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ), Indianapolis, Indiana, celebrated 39 years as
our Senior Pastor as well as his 42nd year in ministry in October,
2008. With this significant milestone, Bishop Benjamin has the longest
pastorate of any Senior Pastor in the history of LWCC. He is also only
the 4th Senior Pastor in the 142-year history of the church. He is
widely known for his commitment to excellence as a pastor and life
coach. He is also widely known for his gifts of hospitality and
generosity. Earning his undergraduate degree from St. Louis University
(B.A.), he also holds two (2) earned cum laude graduate degrees (M.Div.
and D.Min.) from Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Additionally, he holds 6 (six) honorary doctorate degrees and a host of
other awards that recognize his deep commitment to quality preparation
for ministers as well as his bridge building between races and
denominations in the City of Indianapolis. Dr. Benjamin's passion is
children, and he has authored four books: Boys To Men, The Home
Alone Syndrome, Mama's Boy, and his most recent book, It's All In Your
Mind. He is an international speaker and life coach. He is also
an avid golfer as well as a music enthusiast. His pride is his family
which consists of his beautiful and creative life partner, Lady
Beverly, three awesome adult sons, one darling daughter-in-law, and one
"grand" grandson, Channing Carlyle, II. He is also the author of It's All In Your Mind. E-mail: ahord@lightoftheworld.org. Website: www.TomBenjamin.com.

Music
Minister of the Week: CeCe Winans
If
you ask CeCe Winans what drives her, the answer will be far removed
from her endless list of accolades, best-selling albums, widespread
industry recognition, and vast amounts of press coverage. She'll make
no mention of the multiple GRAMMY®, Stellar, and Dove awards she's
garnered over the years, let alone the several gold-and
platinum-certified albums she's scored-not even those she nabbed with
brother BeBe as part of the hit-making duo BeBe & CeCe Winans. She
won't tell you she's graced the covers of high-profile publications
such as Essence, Jet, CCM, and Today's Christian Woman, among countless
others, or that she's made her rounds in the talk-show circuit, making
appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Oprah, Live with
Regis & Kathie Lee, and more. And radio hits? Forget about it. When
all is said and done, CeCe's heart lies someplace else. Thy Kingdom
Come (PureSprings Gospel), her eighth solo album, is a reflection of
where her heart resides: in the very inner court of the heavenly
realms, where Christ Himself is enthroned. "When you're in the throne
room, your focus is just God," CeCe says. "Nothing's more powerful than
that. When you do other music-positive music, gospel, inspirational,
whatever you want to name it-you're teaching lessons to other people,
which is still very important. But nothing is more powerful than when
you're face to face with God." "At the end of the day, if I'm sitting
in church, I'm really happy, I'm really at home. When you're outside of
that, it becomes more about the call. But when you're inside, you don't
have to be mindful of other things. You're just alone in His presence."

Christian History: February
23, 1814 -- The foundation of the Baptist Mission in Jamaica had been
laid by a few black and "coloured" men who had gone to the island from
America in 1782. Some of them had been slaves in the United States who
had been granted liberty by their owners. Some were Christians when
they arrived in Jamaica, while others had been converted after their
arrival. The most noted were George Lisle (the first ordained black in
America), George Lewis, George Gibb and Moses Baker. It was chiefly
through Moses Baker's recruiting efforts that the English Baptist
Missionary Society took up missionary work in Jamaica. The first
missionary sent from England in response to Baker's pleas was John
Rowe, who landed at Montego Bay, February 23, 1814. For the

The Word
of God for this Week
"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.."
--Matthew 1:21
"The spirit of Christmas needs to be superseded by the
Spirit of Christ. The spirit of Christmas is annual; the Spirit of
Christ is eternal. The spirit of Christmas is sentimental; the Spirit
of Christ is supernatural. The spirit of Christmas is a human product;
the Spirit of Christ is a divine person. That makes all the difference
in the world. " --Stuart Briscoe
MOTIVATING VERSE: "And whatsoever ye shall ask
in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the
Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." --John
14:13-14
"He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall
doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him." --
Psalm 126:6
