George
Bush the Religious Moderate?
While being a committed
Christian, Tony Blair did not, in Alistair Campbell's famous phrase,
"do God". George Bush is different. Famously born again from his
dissolute, hard drinking ways, the soon-to-depart US president's
fervent faith helped make America's large evangelical community the
bedrock of his election victories.

"Being Saved" in Black America
While growing up in a very religious and church-going family, I often
heard the phrase "Being Saved." Now to me and my peers, "Being Saved"
was a rather spooky and mystical thing, and only the real holy folk
could be such — whatever it was.

Music
Minister of the Week: The Blind Boys of Alabama
Since
1939, The Blind Boys of Alabama have sung a fervent blend of
traditional and contemporary Gospel music. Much has changed during
these seven prolific decades. Stylistic phases have waxed and waned;
personnel has come and gone. 78 r.p.m. records have given way to LPs,
followed by eight-track tapes, cassettes, and CDs. The Blind
Boys’ audience – once rigidly segregated and
confined to traditional Gospel venues – now reflects the
group’s eclectic, global following, while their repertoire
has expanded to embrace secular songs with a strongly spiritual
message. Such wide acceptance is also evidenced by four Grammy Awards,
an honor that didn’t exist when the Blind Boys started out.
Even so, the Blind Boys’ lengthy saga remains a steadfast
testament to constancy. Singer Jimmy Carter, who was there when the
group was first formed, leads the band today with the firm conviction,
joyous commitment, and gravitas that befit an elder statesman. E-mail
address: info@blindambitionmgt.com.

Prayer Motivator for this Week PRAYER
QUOTE: "Is the Son of God praying in me, or am I
dictating to Him?....Prayer is not simply getting things from God, that
is a most initial form of prayer; prayer is getting into perfect
communion with God. If the Son of God is formed in us by regeneration,
He will press forward in front of our common sense and change our
attitude to the things about which we pray." --Oswald

Christian History:
Eliza George:
February 2, 1911 -- During a morning devotional hour at Central Texas
College in Waco, a teacher, Eliza George, has a vision of black
Africans passing before the judgment seat of Christ. They are weeping
and moaning, "No one ever told us You died for us." A few years
earlier, while a student at Guadalupe College, Eliza George had
responded to an invitation for volunteer missionary service. Now, she
felt a vision was prodding her to go to Africa. The college president
tried to dissuade her: "Don't let yourself get carried away by that
foolishness. You don't have to go over there to be a missionary -- we
have enough Africa over here." It would be two more years before Eliza
George got up enough courage to leave her teaching position and head to
Liberia. In her resignation speech, she read an original poem: "My
African brother is calling me; Hark! Hark! I hear his voice...Would you
say stay when God said go?" On December 12, 1913, Eliza George sailed
from New York as a National Baptist missionary. For the latest

The Word
of God for this Week
"But I
would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are
asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope." --1
Thessalonians 4:13
"Our hope in God pulls us into the future. Hope allows
us to affirm the reality of the abundant life that is ours in Christ.
Hope allows us to stand with those in pain and to hold them until they
are able to feel the love of God for themselves again. Hope allows us
to work to bring God's reign upon the earth even when we see no
results. Our hope begins and ends in God, the source of all hope."
--Mary Lou Redding
MOTIVATING VERSE: "And
this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing
according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us,
whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired
of him." --1 John 5:14-15
"And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach
and preach Jesus Christ."
--Acts 5:42
